For over 25 years Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne
have been the world’s greatest innovators in Argentine tango. Gustavo
and Giselle have dedicated their life to understanding, codifying,
creating, teaching, innovating, and performing this dance, which has
consumed us all. New York is the dance capital of the world. The modern
dance era with all its glorious personalities – Martha Graham,
Balanchine, Jerome Rogers, Alvin Ally and many others have all called
New York home.
Tango, as legitimate art form, is relatively recent. Tango is unique as
it is a living art from which is based on the temporal, ephemeral
relationship of a couple. It is only fitting that, as Argentine Tango
takes it’s place on the world stage as a contemporary art form, the
couple who brought this dance into the modern era presents their life’s
work here in New York.
Most festivals belong to an organization, which highlight different
dance personalities, instructors, and styles. For the first time, this
event will present the work of a single couple – Gustavo Naveira and
Giselle Anne. Tango Art 2009 is not just a dance festival presenting a
diverse group of dancers presenting steps. Tango Art 2009 is an art
festival which will present Argentine tango to the world as an art form
deserving it’s reputation. |

Session Descriptions |
| Boleos |
| The three epochs of boleos will be presented:
classic or traditional, modern, and the current “top fashion”. |
| Cochabamba Practica |
|
The Cochabamba Practica is a
guided practica for students to come and practice the material and
themes learning in previous sessions. The practica leaders are
highly skilled dancers who have trained extensively with Gustavo y
Giselle Anne. You may bring your filmed material or material from
previous workshops. We highly encourage you to change partners in
order to properly develop mastery of the subject material. We have
found that practicing the material in the hours after the class
greatly increase retention and provides students with an opportunity
to reflect and resolve issues.
The Cochabamba practice was started on advice given to me by Gustavo
Naveira. I lamented to Gustavo that I felt stymied in New York. The
milongas often start too late for my early morning work schedule,
both milongas and practicas are often too crowded, and there didn't
seem to be a forum for advanced dancers. Gustavo grabbed his car
keys, I grabbed a bottle of wine, and off to Cochabamba we went.
Gustavo begin to explain chaos theory, tango, and learning. Many of
the world's top dancers came out of the Cochabamba practica. It gave
them a place to experiment, to cooperate, and to grow. Central to
the theme of tango is chaos theory - if you want to dance really
well you must be able to act and react and train your brain to do so
as well. The old lead - follow techniques, which closely resemble
Spike TVs' wrestling, are not going to work. Both leader and
follower become active partners in the movement. I know, what a
concept - partners. It's not a step, it's not lead with hands, a
follower is not pushed, pulled, or tossed around the floor. It is
the presentation of a movement that propels the leader to present
the idea and the follower to act on the idea.
Cochabamba Practica started in March 2008 and has two formats. The
first format, on Mondays, is focused on methodically training
dancers. There is one hour of Tango-Rolling followed by one hour of
tango exercises designed to produce muscle memory, improve balance
and form, learn musicality, and explore advanced lead and follow
techniques. The second format is modeled on Gustavo’s original
Cochabamba (discussed in the prior paragraph). |
| Caminadas |
| Caminatas includes sequences, which are designed
to resolve coordination problems associated with walking as a
couple. In addition, we will examine technique aspects such as the
proper use of the embrace, foot placement, etc. |
| Changes of Directions I & II |
| Changes of Directions are
fundamental to understanding tango structure. The process of walking
and turning as a couple creates structural issues, which require
changes of direction in order maintain the “dancability” of the
sequence. We will examine how to dynamically create these solutions.
|
| Estructura |
| According to Giselle Anne,
without a proper understanding of Estrutura it is impossible to take
your dance to a higher level. Learn from the Masters the secrets of
structure and how to elevate your dance to a new level. |
| 4th Sacadas |
| The 4th sacada is the ultimate
sacada – sexy, fun, and exhilarating. Put some rock and roll into
your dance – these are sacadas pushed to the extreme. |
| General Program Seminar |
The General Program Seminar
consists of a review of the most “important problems” of tango
dance, and the use of specific principles to resolve them. In order
to facilitate a discussion of these “important problems” we can
divide them in two groups.
The first group is comprised of Elements, which are permanently in
use and include:
- Leading and following focusing on sensitivity
towards the partner;
- The embrace with respect to distances,
posture, sides, etc;
- The use of the space and the positions
including action, reaction, and directions;
- Musical adjustment for rhythm, phrasing, “tras-pie”,
musicality;
- The displacement of “walks” in a straight
line, the code and systems of walking;
- The turns as they relate to the axis, senses
of turning, structure
These elements can be considered the necessary
base for a tango to be reasonably danced and under control. In this
seminar, we will analyze how are these elements operate not only
during the usual “walking” but during the execution of specific
figures as well.
The second group includes specific choreographic ideas that are most
frequently used and include:
- Boleos
- Sacadas
- Ganchos
- Capturas, Barridas and Pasadas
- Volcadas
- Colgadas
These “ideas” and the great variety of figures
that can be created from them will be studied in this seminar,
digging deep into the specific technical principles that each idea
presents. In other words, if we take for example the idea ”sacada”,
we will study the general technique of the “sacadas” in order to
correctly execute or dance a sacada in any of its variations. One
of the characteristics of this Seminar is its careful and detailed
analysis of the technique in order to achieve two things: quality in
the execution and the value of the movement. We firmly believe that,
true to each individual’s capacity, the better you can achieve these
principles the more you will enjoy it. |
| Giros |
| We will examine the organic
composition of turning including (but not limited to) topics such as
Structure, Lead and Follow, Code of Walking, Basic Rhythm, Different
Speeds, Embrace and Balance. |
| Interesting Combinations |
| Learn the art of combining diverse choreographic
ideas into a coherent statement of fluidity. |
| Lecture: Tango Nuevo – What it is and What it’s Not |
| Join us Thanksgiving evening for
a thematic lecture with Q & A in an Argentinean inspired casual
dining experience. Come get to know the greatest minds in tango
today. |
| Off Axis |
| Take your dance for a walk on the
wild side. Learn to take any step off axis and create beautiful
movements and elevate your follower to a higher plane. Colgadas,
Volcadas, and dynamic off axis turns are examined for structure,
technique, and movement. |
| Rhythm & Phrasing |
| We will explore the relationship
between the creative process and movement as the dancer interprets
the music. We will learn to examine the rhythmical subdivision and
construction of musical phrases. |
| Sacadas: Hombre y Mujer |
| An overview of basic technique
needed to properly sacada for both leader and follower. The
technique will be applied in various combinations and sequences with
an emphasis on understanding the challenges and problem resolution.
|
| Tomas , Barridas y Pasadas |
| We will learn how to analyze
tomas, barridas, and pasadas in order to explore the varied and
multiple possibilities, which can turn these steps into a bastian of
creativity. |
| Tango Rolling |
| Tango-Rolling is a program of
muscle manipulation and stretching designed by dancers for dancers.
It assists in removing muscle blockages, reducing soreness, and
improves flexibility in a gentle fashion. Tango Rolling is taught
daily in Buenos Aires at Gustavo and Giselle Anne’s seminars. Both
Gustavo and Giselle Anne practice Tango Rolling daily. They believe
it is an important modality in preventing injury. |
